Opportunity of Transport Sustainability For A Small City: Case Study

Abstract--- A sustainable public transportation system is crucial to reduce air pollution and the environmental impacts of the sector. This is pursued not only in big cities and metropolitan areas, but also small citizen context are interested in this environmental commitment. This paper wants to analyse the case study of the renewal process of Local Public Transport (LPT) in a small city. Models and algorithms that allow the set-up of the analysis on green shift investments are collected. A focus on the city centre of Cremona is set and the goal of reproducibility of each step is assessed as results. The results investigate the implementation of two new bus lines, planned to adapt the service currently available to the potentially evolving demand. Electric-powered buses were selected as the best alternative to accomplish the purpose of this research and a particular attention was paid to the energy supply chain. The economic aspects were explored through indicators such as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Finally, a set of qualitative tools was created for the evaluation of alternatives that could guide the process of rational choice in light of the priorities indicated by the stakeholders involved in the study.
