Initialization Method For Synchronous and Inverter Based Generation Units In Power Electronic Dominated Networks

This paper proposes an initialization method for generation units such as synchronous generators (SGs) and inverter-based resources (IBRs) in large power system models with high penetration of renewables. The suggested method initializes SGs, and particularly the outer control loops of the IBRs with L and LCL filter topologies for EMT-based simulations. To accomplish this, a power flow solution from Phasor Model (PM) type software was utilized to extract the required data. Then depending on the power system asset, the model is initialized based on the mathematical equations. Moreover, once the system has been initialized, a start-up sequence has been applied and the presented methodology is validated in the IEEE 118 bus system. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the initialization of SGs and converters with different filter topologies and applies it to several scenarios. It is shown that in PSCADTM simulations, the presented approach can be potentially used to initialize large IBR-dominated networks by significantly reducing the time required to achieve steady-state conditions.
